Featured July Interview – Jenn from Pennhurst Paranormal Association

Hello Fiends.

It’s that time again where I pick at someone’s brain matter. For our July interview I was able to discuss the paranormal with Jen of the Pennhurst Paranormal Association. She was kind enough to invite me down for an investigation. I am definitely putting it in my schedule for my haunted visits web series I am currently creating.

Thanks for blessing this page with your eyeballs.

M: How did you get into paranormal research?

J: It started about 20 years ago my husband (my boyfriend back then) and I would go to Gettysburg and scope out the battlefields. I like to say we investigated before it was cool. I always thought it was cool all the stories. We went armed with our 35mm camera. We loved it so much we spent our honeymoon there in the most haunted bed and breakfast.

M.) Your Facebook says you investigate for Pennhurst Paranormal Association, what can you tell us of your work and the association?

J: We do guided tours for those that have always wanted to investigate and don’t have a group. They run Friday nights from 9P to 3A. If you don’t know what you are doing we bring our own equipment and show you how to use it. We go through all rooms and floors and do actual investigations. We like to keep the groups small so everyone can have their own experience. It is 99 a person. We also do private groups where a paranormal group can rent Pennhurst from 7P to 3A. That runs from 800 to 1000 depending on the night you pick. We currently do one building, The Mayflower, we are looking to open others very soon. All the money that is made goes right back to rehab and asbestos removal.

M.) What drew you to Pennhurst?

  1. J) I have always liked history and old buildings. When I got to Pennhurst I fell in love. I have such a passion for that place. The place is as it was back in the day. Things left there as if they just got up and walked out. Of course the buildings have been renovated and asbestos has been removed. It is hard to explain until you step foot on that property. Plus to remind people we can’t go back to what is was like in there. The children need a voice.

M.) Can you tell us a little bit about the history of Pennhurst and the spirits that reside there?

J.) Pennhurst was opened in 1908 for the epileptic and feeble minded. In about 3 years it was at max capacity and over. Back then it wasn’t “right” to have a child that was different. You were told by Dr.’s and Priests to take them to Pennhurst. Once at Pennhurst the parents were told not to visit because it could disrupt their progression. Babies and Children were dropped off never to see their parents again. Pennhurst started taking in the criminally insane too. There was patient on patient, staff on staff and staff on patient abuse. Please watch Suffer the Little Children on YouTube. It is an expose done by a reporter from Philadelphia. Womb to tomb care is what it was referred to. They were their own city. They had their own farm and livestock. The power plant received coal from rail car. Pennhurst even had their own currency.

The spirits are mostly children. You will come across some of the people that have worked there also. Young adults too that were patients.

Please like Pennhurst Paranormal Association on Facebook for up and coming news and information. Also on Twitter and PennhurstParanormal.com

M.) Are there negative spirits that reside there that you have encountered?

J.) Yes there are a few. In the Mayflower building we have 2 that are really mean. I wouldn’t say evil. There is King in the basement. He was a maintenance man and worked in the boiler rooms. He likes to mess with the people of Pennhurst Paranormal Assoc. (PPA) We have a newer spirit … not sure where he came from. He is on the 3rd floor. He likes to go after the big jock type men. He actually chokes them out to the point they black out. He is not to be messed with.

M.) What can you tell us about your first paranormal encounter?

J.) The very first that I can remember was on our honeymoon in Gettysburg. Were stayed at the Farnsworth House, in the Sarah Black room, the most haunted room there. Needless to say I was REALLY scared. (I have gotten MUCH better since) I made my hubby take me to Wal Mart at like 1 am because I couldn’t sleep. Finally he brought me back and I kept EVERY single light on in the room. There was a grandfather clock on the landing outside our room, it was from the civil war. It chimed every hour, and when it chimed I felt someone … something sat at the bottom of the bed. You know when you are under the covers and someone sits next to you and the covers get tight. That is how it was every hour. Finally I had enough and woke my hubs up at around 5am. As I was telling him what happened ALL the lights went out and came back on when I was done. Went to Breakfast and there was a Paranormal Group from Michigan there, they were staying in the room next to us. I did not say what happened but they gave us a card to contact them. I wanted to see what they got. I emailed them a few weeks later and they happened to have a camera set up all night in the room. They said ever hour they saw an orb go from their room to ours ….. BAM …. I was like Holy shit!!!!

M.) Have you had an encounter that has truly terrified you?

J.) I can’t say I remember, but my team seems to think so. We were doing an extremely old building in the Tamaqua area, it used to house the Molly McGuire’s (they were Irish Mob). There was a meeting room on the 3rd floor, it had a big Star of David on the ceiling. We decided to do a séance I remember the lighting of the candles and that is about it. I was told I got really glassy eyed and very mono toned. Once we cleaned up and left. I was fine. My group was really worried and didn’t want to be alone with me.

M.) Do spirits have the ability to harm investigators?

J.)Yes … I have seen it firsthand. My husband hates the basement of Pennhurst. He gets really sick he has to run out and ends up vomiting. King also threw a rock at one of the investigators head and made him bleed.

M.) What equipment do you use to collect evidence?

J.) We have been doing it for so long we have quite a collection. We started with cameras and voice recorders. Infrared and Full Spectrum video cameras, DVR system, motion lights, laser grids, spirit box, ovilus x, talker, EMF detectors, Mel-meter, trigger object alarm, VRM and of course the best equipment ever our senses.

M.) How do you know when a spirit is trying to contact you?

J.) You don’t always. Sometimes you have no idea until you go through all the evidence. Spirits aren’t pets, you can’t command them to do something. It isn’t all physical, you most likely won’t get touched or pushed. My first night at Pennhurst I felt and heard nothing, but the EVP’s were out of this world!

M.) Have you investigated other places?

J.)Yes, we like to do residences too. If people need help we are there to help. We do not charge anything. We do it for the information and to help others out! You meet so many great people doing this. We use to do a resort in the Poconos that was haunted. We did it 2 times a year and did a paranormal seminar and investigation at night for their customers. It was a blast! Unfortunately they ended up selling the resort.

M.) What is your opinion of ghost hunting shows? Do you think they capture what an investigation is like or make a mockery?

J.) It depends. I don’t think they are meant to make a mockery out of what we do. When shows are on and they say this is what we caught in 12 hours, just know they spent more than 1 night there. There are times we walk out with nothing to show, it happens, but you never ever see it happen on T.V. This sets us up for an epic fail when people expect something every time. It doesn’t happen every time. I do watch some of them, but some are just plain explainable. We always try to debunk before we say it is something. Even with EVP’s (Electronic Voice Phenomena) if we can’t make out what it says we throw it out. We only take class A or B EVP’s.

M.) What would be the most haunted place you’ve ever investigated?

J.)I would have to say Pennhurst. I have walked out of there every time with an experience, or EVP, always something. Next would be the place in Tamaqua, we always got something there too.

M.) Are there places in the future you would love to investigate?

J.) There are many places I would love to check out. Poveglia Island in Italy is one of my top places. I also want to visit other state schools just to see how they differ, if they do, from Pennhurst. Salem would love to visit there, also see the Lizzy Borden House. The list just goes on and on!!!!

M.) Do you have any advice for those who wish to pursue paranormal research?

J.) I do … stick to your guns! Follow what you believe in, don’t let anyone tell you differently. We have been with many groups, you have to find the right people to investigate with. You will find people want to investigate but don’t want to be there for the review of evidence. It takes a lot of hard work and dedication …. I love what I do, I like to say I am the voice of the dead.

Paranormal Experiences

Hello my devils & ghouls.

There is always that debate whether ghosts are real or if there is a scientific explanation for everything. I for one, thing that a paranormal experience needs to be just that – experienced – before you can decipher. I have been dealing with paranormal experiences since I was a little kid. Today, I’m going to discuss a spirit in my house and the two rooms I call “Forbidden Rooms” because I don’t go in them due to how uncomfortable I feel. Not in the evil and afraid sense, but the sense that someone or something is constantly watching you.

In my house, my grandmother has two rooms for when she comes to visit. They include a bedroom and a small living room. She likes to call it “Grandmother’s Space.” Currently, my grandmother has returned to her home out of state and her rooms are empty. In her bedroom, she has a lot of religious artifacts up on her wall. Which, I don’t like at all. They feel like they are judging you even if you are doing something great for the family. In this room, she does not have any form of technology that could cause this – just an old fashioned alarm clock that doesn’t have the red digital numbers – and her clothing. At night, you can see a red orb existing in front of her calendar. It does not move.  The room gets cold at all times.

Her living room however, the temperature fluctuates — from a eerie cold to an eerie hot to normal and then back to the cold and hot. 3 people that have stayed in that room have reported a shadow walking passed the television. All three times, no one has been near the room nor was the television on. I decided to take a look at it myself. I have witnessed the temperature changes and the shadow figure walking by. It does not become bothersome. Just as if it’s doing an every day routine. The only eerie thing about the room is how you feel like you’re being watched. You feel and know that you aren’t alone.

My family has a lot of skeptics in it. Which is confusing since they’ll believe a man survived in a whale and Jesus came back to life but they won’t believe in the spirit realm. When I am home alone, you can hear footsteps of heavy boots and the steps of what seems to be a female in dress shoes. In my laundry room, I have seen a man walking through the hallway – seem to be wearing a very high class fashion, cape;cane;top hat;suit-  as if he’s going to a theater.

Sometimes… I wonder if these ghosts are here trying to show me how to succeed in my current path.

Dream – Positive Ouija Board & The Stranger – What does it mean?

Hey Creeps.

Last night, despite my over stressing, I slept very well. Honestly, it may not seem like a big deal to you, but it is to someone that barely sleeps ever. I slept so good and woke up with high spirits!

My dream:

In my dream, I started off sitting on my lawn and a stranger came up to me. She was a woman of about 45 and dressed in women’s clothing from 1700s. She smiled at me and took my hand.

Part One: I was dreaming about the business. I was at a meeting with people I didn’t know. it was some committee and I had to prove that I was worth the risk to loan me business credit. After the meeting, I had a smile on my face and a ouija board popped up in my dream. It kept saying positive messages such as yes, forward, accomplish, and the company of which I’m seeking a loan from. Anyone know what this part means?

Part two: My boyfriend and I were on the road together. In a band with some of his pals he recently re-connected with. We were having a good time. This girl tried to come between us but failed and he kept announcing how we’re together forever. She kept trying because she used to be associated with him in the past but she never succeeded and it all of a sudden started to flash before my eyes. All good memories and events that happen to us in our journey together. Two orbs came out of our bodies and intertwined. What does that mean?

Part 3: The positive ouija board came out again. With words of encouragement. Esther is the woman’s name. She says she’s my spirit guide and but couldn’t speak so she spelled out. She wanted me to feel better and know I’m on the right track.

– I researched the name Esther circa 1700s… she used to live on my property. One of the first people to be in my town. She claimed in my dream to have been watching me a long time and she will guide the way.

– What does this dream all mean?!

I have had positive energy and a smile on my face ever since the dream. I couldn’t stop smiling even when I try. What is going on?!

Spirit Stories

Me in a graveyard circa 2006.

Me in a graveyard circa 2006.

I have always been fond of cemeteries. When I was old enough to take walks by myself, I would start to take walks to different cemeteries in my area. As I got older and received a license, I would travel to cemeteries in different towns around me.

Me in a cemetery circa 2012.

Me in a cemetery circa 2012.

These places are like parks to me. I would sit down and read before long I would start taking photographs and started to write. This is when things got a little weird. I’ve always been one that believes in the spirit world as you have read by other posts on my blog, (and if you’re a first time creeper, well now you know), my first experience with the strange is when I was still in high school. I went for my usual walk to a local cemetery notebook in hand. My attention was immediately drawn to this a particular grave. It was a grave of a young woman who died in 1920s. I sat upon the grave and started to write. It was like instant inspiration. I looked over the story and saw that it was about a woman in the 1920s who met her demise by falling out of a building and into the river below. I didn’t take this so seriously. When I write, I usually write and go with it. Not thinking twice about it. When I took it to school, I had my friends take a look at it. They looked at me quite funny after reading it and said that it sounded like something from the news. I thought they were picking on me because I told them I was hanging around the cemetery and they would never do as such.

What I did was go to the library and searched the young woman’s name and the situation that was in my story. It turns out the young woman who I was “sitting” with actually did die the same way that was written in my story! I went back to the cemetery and felt a pull to a different grave site. This one was of a man who had died of natural causes but regretted not seeing his wife one last time before his demise. I went to my friends with the story. One of them started to tear up and tell me how that was their grandfather and that he didn’t get to see his wife again because she died the same night while away.

It wasn’t just cemeteries that would have this connection with me. Abandoned places as well. I started to take a notebook everywhere. Lyrics/poetry would come out. I took it as nothing more than these places inspiring me. Whether I have the gift of being a medium or not, I honestly don’t know. But the writings matching with up with events of the people that had perished were too perfect.

I know that there are spirits in my home besides my visit from grandpa. I hear a tiny girl in my bedroom, her name is Lisa. The land of which my house sits used to belong to her family in the 1700s. I started researching my own property and found out that my writings have told the stories of those passed. It first alerted me when I was writing about things I didn’t have a great knowledge about, speaking in old mannerisms, and feeling like I was taken back to the place this all happened. Could this be the spirits trying to share their life with me? Or perhaps wanting a few last words before crossing over? Do they just want me to listen? Questions that will never be answered I suppose.

One Step Beyond (T.V. Series Review)

Dearest Creeps,

Lately, I have been dwelling in the depths of vintage television series. I must say that I am ashamed at myself for almost forgetting one of my favorite vintage television shows:

This television series was the underdog of the popular television series, The Twilight Zone. The original run of this series was from 1959 – 1961. It’s a shame it only had three seasons because it was much different from the Twilight Zone. This series was introduced by John Newland in each episode. Unlike Twilight Zone which was a series composed of fictional science fiction and horror stories to stimulate your brain, One Step Beyond is a show that re-created REAL cases that have been documented. What I like about the show is that they don’t tell you if the tales are true or false. It’s up to the audience to come to their own conclusion and wonder the wonderful question: “What if…” It’s like a constant cliff hanger that would drive a nerd such as myself to research the cases presented for more information to come to a well thought out conclusion.

I always enjoy shows that are based upon documented cases. It’s good to see this series up on Youtube with a channel dedicated to these marvelous episodes. If you like shows such as Twilight Zone, Night Gallery, The Outer Limits, etc. and are a huge vintage nerd, check out the episode below:

Thanks for wasting time with my existence.

I’m Writing a Horror Film

Hello my creeps.

Yes, I am writing a lot in my blog tonight because I have the funny feeling that I shall be busy writing my horror film today and will be neglecting my blog for a little while. I have been inspired to write my own horror film. It started off as a short story is now turning into a film within my brain and I’m inspired to write music and lyrics for it as well. My creativity is sky rocketing lately and I’m going to take advantage of it.

I will lock myself in my room with my notebooks, candles, and snackage to work upon this master piece festering within my brain. I enjoy creative binges. I must say though the best inspiration always comes when in the shower. Why is that? I hate it sometimes. Because when I get out and I’m back to reality — I forget what I have thought up. Soooooo — Lock away in my room with Mozart and candles to go on a creative splurge.

The Girly Ghosthunters (Review – Please Shoot Me)

A follower of my youtube told me to check out a show entitled, The Girly Ghosthunters. Now, when I saw the name I was already getting the noose ready but I was a trooper and sat through the 13 episodes they have. Why did I sit through it all? I think it’s because I had no idea what to say about it and I was just sitting there with a look of “How could these people ever have a show in the first place” to click the “X” button.

Let’s get into the review. You have four girls attempting to be ghost hunters. In the opening sequence, you see their names and their favorite ghost hunting tools. So these four girls shove themselves in an RV and go places that are supposedly haunted. Sounds only okay at this point right?

Wrong! The majority of the show is just them interviewing people at the places of interest, they walk around like they are giving tours and then scare themselves at night by acting like city chicks in the woods.

They don’t show any of their findings nor give you any explanation at the end. It’s just a short recap of their idiotic screams. You can’t take the show seriously at all. When they do attempt to use the ouija board it’s clear that they are moving it and joking around. I can’t believe people like this get say with being signed for one season and people out there that have a great interest in paranormal investigation aren’t given a chance. seriously World… what is wrong with you.

Anyway, thanks creep on my youtube for making me want to jump off a bridge watching this crappy show.

Blood & Guts,

Ouija Boards: Game or Real?

I’ve always had a fascination with learning about the darker side of the world. Ever since I was a wee-little girl, I was writing lyrics about ghouls and goblins only to grow up to be the “weird kid” in school and basically in life. When it comes to the paranormal I always run into three types of people. 1 – The Believer 2 – The Fraudulent Skeptic 3 – The Skeptic. I say these three types of people because I always have believers that tell me about the ouija board. They treat it with respect and as a form of communication. The fraudulent skeptic is usually (at least in my eyes) the person that says “It’s just a game!” but when the board is out they freak out. And then they’re are the true skeptics that say “It’s just a game and your imagination.” While I respect all 3 types of people for their input on this matter and enjoy hearing views from all sides — I have to go with the side of the believer.

I say this because I’ve had experiences with the paranormal. I see the board as a good tool to talk with passed lives. But, I also realize that there can be danger. Just like with most things in life – You can go for a walk because its good and healthy yet you have the danger of getting hit by a car. Now, I know some people will say — “The supernatural is more dangerous than that.”

I’ve been told to treat the board with respect and use safety (candles, prayers, spells, etc) and you’ll be fine. I’ve only used the board twice. Both times with someone that knew what she was doing. But I can’t help but wonder what others think… Real or Fake?
